Entanglement entropy of the free Fermi gas

We consider ground states of the free Fermi gas (with or without a magnetic field) and determine the leading asymptotic behavior of their entanglement entropy as the domain of restriction, Λ⊂ℝd, becomes large. It depends on the surface area of the boundary of Λ and of the Fermi sea or the magnetic field in a non-trivial way. The mathematical methods and tools are semi-classical in nature and were highly influenced by Harold Widom. The presented results have been obtained in joint work with Hajo Leschke, Paul Pfeiffer, and Alexander V. Sobolev.
